The canon effects are due to it being very slightly destabilized around the edges when an electrical field is applied, which causes a level of gravitational change that manifests as the mass effect field. It's basically a lattice of normal matter which traps a much larger amount of dark matter/energy into a form that can interact with the universe we know and love. However, eezo/planium isn't strange matter, not being made of quarks. bad.Ī tiny amount of the stuff could convert an entire planet in a very short period of time, which would destroy everything. The problem comes if the stuff is stable at normal pressures, because it then implies a number of things that end up meaning normal matter can decay into strange matter, and indeed be provoked into doing so by contact with strange matter. Any further and it collapses into a singularity and basically leaves the universe.

Strange matter is the theoretical next stage after neutronium in density, where the matter itself has been compressed to the point it's entirely made of quarks.
